About the Island and sheep farm
Situated at the end of the naturally formed bolder bank that makes up Cable Bay, connecting the Island to the mainland, only 30 minutes drive from Nelson City. Pepin Island is a working sheep station wintering over 2,000 sheep, and around 100 cattle. As a privately owned farm, we love to give you this opportunity to experience the best of its incredible and incomparable landscape. At 1,316 ft high from sea level, and an area of 1,280 acres, the steep and rocky hills roll down through paddocks and native bush, ending at the ocean with towering cliffs and hidden pebbled beaches, Pepin Island is a unique example of distinctive land form and terrain.
area and History
Cable bay and Pepin island have a rich and diverse history. From the formation of the bolder banks, Maori wars and European settlement, rescues from shipwrecks, to technological advancements and the cable connecting New Zealand to the rest of the world. The Island and surrounding areas are steeped in history that has had a wider affect, past, present and future.*

Cafes and Coffee
There are plenty of options and styles in Nelson to enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable cafe experience, Here's a few variations below. We love Devilles for great outdoor seating and atmosphere, coffee, baking and menu options. Morrison Street Cafe is one of Nelsons most popular coffee and lunch spots right next to some good shops. Alternatively If you fancy the high tea experience then go to Melrose Cafe, one of Nelsons stunning historical mansions with beautiful surrounding gardens, and a lovely range of homemade baking and à la carte on offer.
Eating out
There are plenty of wonderful places to eat out in Nelson, from burgers to restaurant dining. Head to the top of Trafalgar Street to find a few great spots for dining out, where you'll also find Burger Culture, one of regular spots for something casual and delicious. The Styx Restaurant in particular is a favourite of ours with waterfront views off the port. The Kitchen offers great sugar free, keto, paleo, gluten and dairy free options — super healthy and is a great cafe. If you love that then you'll also like East Street as a creative vegetarian cafe, central and great at anytime of the day. And if you like Thai with a twist we love Nahm Nelson.
Drinks
Nelson has some wonderful craft beer bars and breweries, check out the converted church that is The Free House with a top range of New Zealand craft beers and casual eating. Or one of our fave breweries the Sprig & Fern on Hardy Street, great for some live music too.
Nelson's Saturday Market
The Nelson Market (a.k.a. the Flea Market as dubbed by locals) is an iconic market showcasing the best of the regions art and craft in all areas. A range of Nelsons artisans and crafts from food, local produce, baking to jewellery, clothing and household items and decor. The Saturday Market, open 8am to 1pm, is a must do in Nelson.
